Halophiles 2010, co-sponsored by Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMCAS), Chinese Society of Biotechnology and Chinese Society of Microbiology, was held from June 29 to July 3 in Beijing. It was the 9th International Conference on halophilic microorganisms which was held in China and in Asia for the first time. More than 180 representatives from over 30 countries attended the conference.
Halophilic microorganisms are major groups of extremophilic microorganisms that live in salty environment. Their physiological and biochemical characters and adaptation mechanism have aroused scientists’ interest to utilize it in the biotechnological development in recent years. The conference focused on origin of life & evolution of species, biodiversity, taxonomy & phylogeny, genome & systems biology, physiological metabolism, molecular genetics & biochemistry and application of halophilic microorganisms. More than 50 scientists made important reports including the latest research achievement in halophilic microorganisms and its future development.
The successful of the conference will promote academic exchange in halophiles between CAS and famous universities in the world. By sponsoring the conference, IMCAS has enhanced its reputation which may strengthen its international cooperation in the future.
