Introduction: Rowland received his Ph.D. in Microbiology in 1989 from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque. He was a postdoctoral fellow from 1989 to 1994 at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in the laboratory of arteriviologist, Peter Plagemann. He then joined the faculty at South Dakota State University in Brookings. Rowland received the Pfizer Animal Health Award for Research Excellence in 2007 and is a member of several swine health and infectious disease advisory groups. He joined Kansas State University in 2001. The current focus is on molecular mechanisms of disease caused by porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2). Related research includes the design and development of novel detection and vaccine approaches, as well as the control of PRRS in the filed. This research has contributed to several high impact publications and review articles (J Virol., J Clin Microbiol).
