Abstract: Our studies to date have focused upon the role of the C. albicans Goa1p in mitochondrial functions. During oxidant and osmotic stress, Goa1p translocates to the mitochondria. An isogenic null mutant (GOA31) was compared to evaluate specific functions of Goa1p. Thus far, we have shown the GOA31 loses mitochondrial membrane potential, produces less ATP and respires less, is unable to adapt to peroxide stress and is avirulence when compare to the wt and a gene-reconstituted strain (GOA31). More recently, we have shown that only Complex I of the ETC is defective enzymatically and that the consequence of this defect is increased cell ROS, apoptosis, and a decrease in chronological life span.
