Dr. ZHAO Jindong’s Resume:
Native of Wujin, Jiangsu Province. Plant physiologist, phycologist. Director (legal representative) of Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
In 1982, graduated from Southwest University and in the same year, enrolled in the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and studied under the supervision of Academician Shanghao LI.
In 1984, sent to study in the United States and received his doctorate at University of Texas in 1990. Academician Zhao returned to China in 1994 and taught in the School of Life Science, Peking University. He successively served as Associate Professor, Professor and Vice Dean of the School of Life Science at Peking University.
In 1995, awarded the National Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
In 2000, appointed as distinguished professor of the Chang Jiang Scholars Program launched by the Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China.
Nov 2007, Executive Deputy Director (legal representative) of Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Dec 2007, elected as Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Nov 2008, Director (legal representative) of Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Prof. Zhao is also a member of executive committee of the Chinese Society for Botany, a member of executive committee of the Chinese Society for Plant Physiology, and Chairman of the Competition Committee of China National Biology Olympiad. He is a member of China Zhi Gong Party and was elected as the Standing Member of the 13th Central Committee of the Zhi Gong Party in December 2007. In January 2008, he was elected as a member of the 11th National Committee of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
Prof. Zhao has long been involved in the research of algal biology. He has conducted systematic researches on the regulation of heterocyst differentiation and pattern formation in cyanobacteria, with special concentration on the signal transduction and gene expression regulation of the heterocyst differentiation in cyanobacteria. Zhao’s research reveals the significant role that calcium-binding protein and calcium signals play in the cell differentiation of cyanobacteria. He has conducted systematic researches on the absorption of light energy by cyanobacterial phycobilisomes and their allocation and regulation of light energy in two photosystems. The researches have made great contribution to the regulation of phycobilisomes which absorb light energy and transfer in photosystem I.
