On October 19, 2018, Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMCAS) officially launched the China-Thailand Joint Laboratory on Microbial Biotechnology with Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR), National Science and Technology Development Agency by National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC), a member of NSTDA. NSTDA President and Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Deputy Governor of TISTR joined this opening ceremony.

Microbial biotechnology is a fascinating area of scientific research and development with extensive applications in many sectors such as food, health and environmental protection.

The three institutes’ cooperation can be traced back to the year 2015 and they signed MoU on China-Thailand Joint Laboratory on Microbial Biotechnology in Bangkok on December 8, 2017. They have been engaging in research and development in microbial biotechnology fields, particularly in microbial database establishment and management.

Establishing China-Thailand Joint Laboratory for Biotechnology will greatly promote cooperation between China and Thailand in the field of microbial biotechnology and help the development and industrialization of microorganisms in both countries, meanwhile providing support for the microorganisms used in medicine, industry and other fields in order to solve the major problems concerning peoples’ health, environment, resources, etc.

It will also help promote bilateral cultural and academic exchanges and play a positive role in promoting Sino-Thai research capacity and personnel upgrading of technology management.

CAS and NSTDA also signed a Document of Understanding on CAS-NSTDA Joint Program under the platform of Joint Lab in the priorities of biodiversity & biotechnology, agriculture, material science and technology, computational science and technology, and railway-related science and technology.
